First Aid Site Assessment

A periodic assessment schedule of your workplace first aid equipment will allow you to identify hazards and determine typical injuries or illness that may require rapid treatment. The assessment should also consider number of employees and work area design as first aid should be easily accessible and available within minutes of the injury location.

Assessment Guidelines For Workplace First Aid

As business operations are constantly changing to meet customer demands your workplace first aid requirements may also require adjustments.

High Risk Workplace

A High Risk Workplace describes an environment where workers are exposed to hazards that could result in serious injury or illness and would require first aid.

Some examples include:

  • Use of hazardous machinery or substances onsite
  • Extreme heat or cold working conditions
  • Risk of falls
  • Hazardous forms of work

Example: Construction, Warehousing, Manufacturing Facilities and Laboratories.

Recommendation: 1 workplace first aid kit should be available on site for at least every 25 people.

Low Risk Workplace

A Low Risk Workplace describes an environment where workers are not exposed to hazards that could result in serious injury or illness. Offices, shops or libraries are common examples and potential work-related injuries and illnesses requiring first aid would be minor in nature.

Recommendation: 1 first aid kit should be available on site for at least every 50 people.

Safe Work Australia, First Aid in the Workplace, released July 2012.

IMPORTANT COMPLIANCE INFORMATION
Workplace First Aid

Australian workplaces are required to have appropriate workplace first aid kits available and accessible for all employees. A workplace is most commonly identified as an office, warehouse, manufacturing facility or a construction site. Trucks, delivery vehicles and company cars also constitute a workplace and require appropriate first aid to be on board.

All workers must be able to access a first aid kit. This will require at least one first aid kit to be provided at their workplace including vehicles and company cars.

For guidance in choosing the right amount of first aid kits refer to First Aid Catalogue page 5

Location

Workplace first aid kits should be kept in a prominent, accessible location and able to be retrieved promptly.

First aid kits should be located close to areas where there is a higher risk of injury or illness, If the workplace occupies several floors in a multi-storey building, at least one first aid kit should be located on every second floor.

Restocking And Maintaining First Aid Kits

A person in the workplace should be nominated to maintain the first aid kit (usually a first aider) and should ensure:

  • The workplace first aid kit is fully stocked, monitored and ensure any items used are replaced as soon as practicable after use.
  • The first aid kit is checked after each use or at least once every 12 months.
  • All items are in good working order, have not deteriorated or have expired as well as the sterile product are sealed and have not been tampered with.

Sorbents

Sorbents

Safety signs are crucial in any work environment. The primary importance of displaying workplace safety signs is to prevent injury and ensure staff and visitors are well aware of the possible dangers and hazards ahead in certain situations and/or environments. Without safety signs in the workplace, many employees would lack the necessary direction in times of crisis, and employers might find themselves in significant legal difficulties if any accidents were to arise as a result.

Our range of sorbents & spill containment products can assist you in meeting you obligations to provide a safe environment to your employees, free from potential workplace risks. Sorbents also ensure that the source of leaks, drips and spills are wiped clean, allowing you to keep work areas safe and tidy to reduce your liability.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) enforces Risk Minimisation by Spill Control. The occupier must ensure that provision is made for spill containment that will, as far as practicable, contain within the occupier’s facility or location of spill or leak of stated dangerous goods or combustible liquids. Heavy penalties are imposed upon failure to meet these requirements.

Some major considerations when choosing sorbent products that are right for you:

  • What are the liquids used in a given area? Coolants, lubricants, cleaners? This will determine the type of sorbent to use (i.e. oil only, general maintenance or chemical).
  • How much liquid is being released, from where? This will help determine what configuration of sorbent to use (i.e. pad, roll, soc, etc.)
  • Are these sorbent being used in a high traffic area? Choose a tough industrial sorbent.
  • Are you looking to go green with your sorbents? Ask for Re-form which is made from recycled cellulose and is up to 50% more absorbent.

Safety Signs

The Importance of Safety Signs

Safety signs are crucial in any work environment. The primary importance of displaying safety signs is to prevent injury and ensure staff and visitors are well aware of the possible dangers and hazards ahead in certain situations and/or environments. Without workplace safety signs, many employees would lack the necessary direction in times of crisis, and employers might find themselves in significant legal difficulties if any accidents were to arise as a result.

By ensuring the workplace is sufficiently well signed, you can help protect your staff and visitors to the site, particularly members of the public, against the possible dangers that may be unnoticed – leading to less industrial accidents and reduced risk to employees and passers-by.

At Jabac we have the widest range of safety signs for the workplace for you to choose from to ensure you can create a safe, well identified facility. Our range of custom signs is designed to meet Australian Standard 1319 which outlines specific parameters for safety signs in an occupational environment.

Pipe Markers

Pipe Markers

Pipe markers allow for improved emergency response time and a professional appearance. Brady’s range of pipe marker products are designed in accordance with AS1345-1995 and enable quick recognition of pipe contents.

A successful pipe identification program helps employees, contractors and emergency responders to distinguish between pipes where there are several side by side. Pipe markers also save valuable time when tracing lines for maintenance and especially in emergency situations.

Defibrillators

Defibrillators

What is a defibrillator?

A Defibrillator is an automated external portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia’s of ventricular fibrillation that uses electricity to re-start the heart or shock it back into its correct rhythm. Defibrillators are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, a heartbeat that is uneven or that is too slow or too fast. Defibrillators can also restore the heart’s beating if the heart suddenly stops with a sudden cardiac arrest.

When to use a defibrillator?

You can use a defibrillator whenever CPR is needed. A person normally needs CPR if they are unresponsive and not breathing when having a sudden cardiac arrest. This is when the heart suddenly stops pumping.  If someone is unresponsive and not breathing make sure an ambulance is called (000) and start CPR and use a defibrillator as soon as possible. The defibrillator analyses the heart rhythm and decides whether an electric shock is needed. Remember time is crucial for a better chance of survival so a defibrillator is a must for every First Aid room and for workplace safety.

No matter the size of your workplace whether low or high risk a defibrillator can reduce the risk of permanent injury and or fatality for anyone having a sudden cardiac arrest.
