Clearly label fire extinguishers and communicate the type of fire they should be used for.

Different fire extinguishers are more effective with different fire classes, some may even cause more harm if used on the wrong type of fire.

It is important to know and understand each extinguisher’s different uses as using the wrong type of fire extinguisher could be fatal.

There are 6 diffferent classes of fire:

 –    Class A fires – combustible materials: caused by flammable solids, such as wood, paper, fabric and plastic
 –    Class B fires – flammable liquids: such as petrol, turpentine, kerosene or paint
 –    Class C fires – flammable gases: like LPG, hydrogen, butane or methane
 –    Class D fires – combustible metals: chemicals such as magnesium, aluminum or potassium
 –    Class E fires – electrical energised equipment: such as short-circuited machinery. Once the electrical item is removed, the fire changes class
 –    Class F fires – cooking oils: like vegetable oil, fats, and lard.

The different types of fire extinguishers are denoted by different colours:

 –    Water: All Red
 –    Foam: Blue
 –    Powder: White
 –    Carbon Dioxide: Black
 –    Wet Chemical: Oatmeal
